This chapter is a reprint of an article that first appeared in the Canadian Institute of Surveying Centennial Proceedings ( 1982); and in a subsequent reprinting in the HSTC Bulletin (1982). It was selected by the editors, for inclusion in an edited volume of outstanding articles in the history of Canadian science, technology, and medicine.
